Are you a skilled trades person ready to be your own boss? This month, Tallahassee Community College Workforce Development Division is delivering a series of workshops for entrepreneurs and small business owners, with a special emphasis on starting a business in the trades. Building and trades are booming in Florida as our population continues to explode, especially in the Big Bend and panhandle regions as we continue to recover from Hurricane Michael.
“As we move into the post pandemic phase the number of startups and business expansions are on the rise,” said Kimberly A. Moore, Vice President of Workforce Innovation & TCC2WORK. “These just-in-time workshops will provide entrepreneurs and small business owners alike with the business fundamentals they need to succeed in our new normal.”
The TCC series includes three workshops that are each 3-4 hours in length: Computer Basics, Creating Your Own Website, and Starting Your Own Business in the Trades. The workshops are supported through a grant from First Commerce Credit Union as part of the Spark! Igniting Entrepreneurs initiative and will be held at the TCC Center for Innovation in downtown Tallahassee.
Computer Basics is designed to help businesses use their computers for much more than office tasks (i.e., word processing and spreadsheets) and using them as marketing, communications, and e-commerce tools. Topics covered in the workshop include social media, mass emailing, how to use shared tools such as Google and Microsoft 365, and what it means to be 'in the cloud'. Workshop starts June 7. Creating Your Own Website covers the basics of setting up a simple business website that can enable customers to schedule appointments and pay online to create a simple e-commerce system for your business. Workshop starts June 14. To register, visit www.tcc.fl.edu/createwebsite.
Starting your Own Business in the Trades is designed to help trades people with the basic business skills they need to step out in front and start their own business. Topics include business planning & modeling, legal considerations, and common pitfalls and hurdles in the world of services companies - with special emphasis on web-based tools, advertising and marketing to help owners and operators learn the best practices of entrepreneurship in the digital age. Workshop starts June 21. To register, visit www.tcc.fl.edu/ownbusiness.
